Elizabeth Walton Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Geraldine Kircher Walton, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, nurse, volunteer, and lifelong learner, joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven on the Feast of the Ascension, May 14, 2026, after spending her final moments peacefully surrounded by family in Durham, North Carolina.

Betty was born on October 16, 1924, in Frenchtown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Herman L. Kircher and Mary S. Bretler Kircher. Her father died when she was just four years old, and from an early age Betty learned the strength, perseverance, and devotion to family that would define her long and meaningful life.

She graduated from Randolph High School in 1943. During World War II, Betty suffered the heartbreaking loss of her fiancé, Bob, who was killed in action in France. With deep patriotic resolve, she supported the American war effort by working for American Viscose Materials, where she helped make parachutes, and later at the Keystone Ordnance Works TNT plant. It was there that she met Willard "Walt" Walton. The two were married on February 14, 1946, beginning a life together rooted in faith, family, hard work, and love.

Betty and Walt had a dairy farm in Centerville, Pennsylvania for several years; they later moved to Titusville where she was a member of St. Titus Catholic Church and sang in the choir and was active in St. Titus School PTA. During her Titusville years, Betty was a Grand Regent of Catholic Daughters of America, a Fourth Degree Grange Member, Coordinator of Teenage Republicans of Crawford County, and President of the Pennsylvania Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary. She was known for her tireless work ethic, her resourcefulness, and the care she poured into her home and family—whether canning food, baking her much-loved sweet rolls, or helping wherever she was needed. In 1970, she graduated from the LPN program at the Vo-Tech in Oil City and went on to work as a nurse at Titusville Hospital, continuing her lifelong commitment to caring for others.

After moving to a retirement community in Sebring, Florida in 1993, Betty continued her active life. She took up oil painting, joined the Leisure Acres Computer Club, and continued serving others through her involvement with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Crisis Pregnancy Center, and the Columbiettes. She corresponded with several pen pals and her entire family, never missing mailing a card for a birthday or any other special occasion.

She served as a participating subject in the Nurses' Health Study, the landmark Harvard research study begun in 1976 to follow the health and lifestyles of nurses across the United States. On one memorable occasion, study investigators contacted her because they suspected her pedometer was inaccurate after it recorded 12 flights of stairs and 12,000 steps in a single day. Betty assured them it was correct: she had taken her usual 1.5-mile morning walk and then done six loads of laundry on the second floor that afternoon. It was a perfect example of her energy, humor, and matter-of-fact determination.

In later years, Betty transitioned from Florida to living with her children, eventually settling into her golden years in Durham, North Carolina, with her eldest daughter's family and the parish of St. Matthew Catholic Church. There she became a beloved gathering point for family reunions, including landmark celebrations for her 90th and 100th birthdays. She kept her mind sharp and her spirit lively by regularly completing puzzles with friends and family.

She is survived by six children, Rose (Dave) Clark, Jodi (Terry) Johnson, Bonnie (Leonard) Matusik, Carol (Alan) Zombeck, Bill (Pat) Walton, and Mary Beth (Ed) Wilson; 25 grandchildren, Tanya (John) Clark Stover, David (Jen) Clark, Carina (Colin Lewis) Clark, Todd (Denise) Riley, Jamie (April Stewart) Riley, Carol Jean (Travis) Fowler, Adam (April) Pierce, Michael (Alana) Pierce, Leanna (Jason) Beam, Linus Lynette Matusik, Peter Matusik, Martha (Mihai Pocse) Matusik, Jonathan (Katherine) Zombeck, Alaina (Andrew) Wollner, Chris Walton, Jeff (Melissa) Walton, Lisa (Brian) Walton, Marybeth (Kellie Glenn) Walton, Elizabeth (Stuart) Davey, Stephen Wilson, Laura (Alex) Haney, Shelly Wooldridge, Jennifer Barr, Wendy Proctor, Paul Wooldridge; and 35 great-grandchildren: Henry, James, Bailey, Desirae, Ricky, Trinity, Savannah, Darien, Alexis, Nathan, Jordan, Austin, Christopher, Gabriella, Braly, Morgan, Brooklyn, Sadie, Zac, Emily, Luke, Phoebe, Joseph, Samantha, Daniel, Elise, Lee, Kylah, Daylon, Liam, Gavin, Benjamin, Caroline Elizabeth, Anderson, and Joanna; and eight great-great-grandchildren, Lily, Mason, Brayden, Madelynn, Brantley, Trulee, Harlow, and Ozzie. Surviving family also includes Pat Wooldridge and Carmen Wooldridge.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Willard Wilman Walton; three children, Darla Jean Walton, Wayne Wendell Walton, and Robert Wayne Walton; foster children Larry Wooldridge and Don Wooldridge; grandchildren Steven Wooldridge, and Jeannette Pierce; five sisters, Roseann Smith, Josephine Adams, Dorothy Shall, Mathilda Fitzgerald and Florence Kinsman; and three brothers, Karl, Frank and Leroy Kircher.
