James Murphy, 89, of Centerville passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Sharon Regional Medical Center.
James was born on January 4, 1934, in Titusville to the late Arthur Joseph and Mildred Ruth (Frost) Murphy.
Jim was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy, class of 1952, in Titusville. After graduation he worked for Universal Cyclops Steel as a nightwatchman before attending Gannon University. Jim transferred to Edinboro College where he completed his bachelor's and master's degree in education.
Jim was employed for 38 years with the Penncrest School District, where he taught High School Social Studies and English. After his retirement he volunteered with the school district in the Elementary Center, tutoring/mentoring students and chaperoning field trips.
Jim was a devote Catholic. He was caretaker and member of Immaculate Conception Church for several decades. He regularly participated in the Cursillo retreats though the Erie Diocesan. Jim was also the caretaker of Curry Cemetery since 1948 and McLaughlin Cemetery in Rome Township since 2006.
Throughout his life, Jim was an active member and volunteer of several organizations: The Titusville Garden Club, the Knights of Columbus. He mentored multiple little brothers through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Crawford County. He received the Award of Big Brother of the Year in 2006.
Jim had a beautiful baritone voice. He was often asked to sing at weddings, funerals, and senior citizen residences. Jim was proud of his Irish Heritage and traveled to Ireland numerous times. He was the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Meadville in 2003 and sang Danny Boy at annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
Maine was Jimmy's happy place away from home. He made lifelong friendships in the Phippsburg, Maine community where he fulfilled his dream of owning a cottage and enjoying the New England lifestyle.
Jim was recently preceded in death by his sister, Karen (Murphy) Gardiner.
Jim is survived by his nieces; Jacqueline Ferency (Leonard) of South Park, and Kristy (Travis) McGill of Titusville. His great niece and nephews; Luke, Dylan, Syndey and Jacob, and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 30th at 11:00 at St. Titus Roman Catholic Church in Titusville.
A private service will be conducted at Immaculate Conception Church followed by Interment of ashes will be at Curry Cemetery at a later date.
