James D. Slocum, 77, of Spartansburg passed away due to complications of congestive heart failure on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Titusville Area Hospital.
Jim was born in Titusville on June 7, 1947, to the late Wilbur and Dorothy White Slocum.
He was a 1966 graduate of Titusville High School. Jim married Kathryn Ongley on March 8, 1969, at the Excelsior Church in Grand Valley. She preceded him in death on November 27, 2017.
Early in life, Jim was well known in the area as the manager of several local gas stations and also worked at tire stores. In 1982, his desire for being self-employed was realized with the opening of Slocum's Saw and Tire Shop. The shop evolved into the convenience store Slocum's Store and has been a staple in the Spartansburg community. Jim loved shooting the breeze with everyone that came in the store.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Spartansburg Sportsman's Club. Jim was on the Sportsman's Club skeet and trap teams for many years.
He loved outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. Jim also loved Chocolate Labs.
Later in life, Jim's passion was for collecting. He collected antiques, Coca-Cola and Roy Rogers memorabilia, guns, knives and Lionel trains. Many items are on display at Slocum's Store in Sparty.
He is survived by his three children: David Slocum and wife Audrey of Spartansburg, Kevin Slocum and wife Jill of Corry, and Cheryl Sandberg of Corry; seven grandchildren, Emma and Evan Slocum, Carter, Cooper and Kate Slocum, Andrew Sandberg and wife Kirsten of Spartansburg and Matthew Sandberg; a sister LouAnne Pangborn of Lakewood, NY; a nephew, Bill Grigsby; and a niece, Amanda Degnan.
Jim's son-in-law Steven R. Sandberg also preceded him in death.
