Leigh I. Rainey, Sr., 80, of Pleasantville, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024, at UPMC Hamot Hospital.
Leigh was born on February 29, 1944, in Ridley Park, PA, to the late Carrell I. and Fronie I. White Rainey. He married Marie Jo Moore on July 28, 1973.
He graduated from Inter Boro High School, Class of 1962. He attended Penn State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education and a master's degree in higher education from Edinboro University.
Leigh was a veteran serving in the United States Army. He was commissioned as second lieutenant through the ROTC program at Penn State University in 1966. After active duty, which included a year in Vietnam, he joined the Reserves. He served as the commander of the 352nd Quartermaster Company in Oil City and as an instructor for the 1036th ASAR School in Farrell. He graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, and of the Associate Logistics Executive Development Course at Ft. Lee, VA. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Leigh worked for Titusville Area School District for 33 years, teaching social studies and civics, retiring in 1999.
He was a member of Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW and Cleo J. Ross Post 368 American Legion.
Leigh loved spending time outdoors, especially hunting. He always made time to be involved in his kids' activities, and his sarcastic sense of humor never failed to bring laughter to those around him.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie of Pleasantville; a daughter, Julie Brown and companion Jason Winans of Titusville; three grandsons, Ricky Brown and wife Rachel, Nate Brown, and Brody Brown, all of Pleasantville; a sister-in-law, Betty Rainey of Pleasantville; and several nieces and nephews.
Leigh was preceded in death by his son, Leigh I. Rainey, Jr.; his brother Carrell I. Rainey, Jr.
Visitation will be held at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home Inc. 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Tuesday, September 17th, from 6 to 8 p.m. and again Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at which time a funeral service will be conducted with Charlie Castelluccio, officiating. Full military rites will be observed.
Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Pleasantville.
