Mr. Richard G. "Rick" Clark, 93, of Titusville, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Titusville Area Hospital.
Rick was born in Mansfield, PA, on September 17, 1931, to the late Marion Bisbee Clark and Harold Gillespie Clark.
Rick graduated from Mansfield Senior High School, Class of 1949, and attended Mansfield State Teachers College for one year, majoring in Music Education.
He joined the PA National Guard in late 1949, the local unit being Ambulance Co., 103rd Medical Battalion of the 28th Infantry Division. With the outbreak of the Korean Conflict in June 1950, this Division was Federalized and sent to Camp Atterbury, Indiana, for further training before sailing to Europe in November 1951 to become part of the occupation forces in Germany. Rick had Med Tech. Training at Brook Army Med School in Texas and CBR Warfare School in Mannheim, Germany. He was honorably discharged with the rank of S/Sgt. From Fort Meade, MD, in June 1953.
He pursued further education at Edinboro State Teachers College, majoring in Art Education, Class of 1956, and later received his ME in Art Education from Penn State University. Rick also studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and spent a semester at Arizona State University pursuing an MFA in sculpture.
Mr. Clark's first teaching position was Art at McGuffey Joint School District in Claysville, PA. In 1958, he accepted the Coordinator of Elementary Art position in the Titusville Schools. In 1977, he moved to the chairmanship of the Art Dept. and taught Junior and Senior High art classes until his retirement in 1992.
Rick was a life member of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW and Cleo J. Ross Post 368. He worked for many years with stained glass and is represented in private collections across the US and New Zealand. He has repaired windows in local churches and homes. He enjoyed working with wood, ceramics, and printmaking. Music was his favorite pastime. He sang tenor, both soloing and in many choral groups, including the Venango Chorus, various church choirs, musical theater in Oil City, and the Titusville Summer Theater. He had been a choral director substitute at three different churches.
Rick was an ardent environmentalist and enjoyed gardening and birding. He traveled extensively, visiting 46 US States and 48 countries on six continents. He loved jokes and puns and learning foreign languages, having some speaking knowledge of French, German, and Spanish.
Richard had several illustrations included in Mabel Clark's "Titusville, An Illustrated History" published in 1976. He drove for the American Cancer Society's "Road to Recovery" program for twenty years, having been a cancer survivor himself. He was a member of the Lions Club, Elks Club, and Titusville Council of the Arts and was co-chairman of the "Brothers to Brothers" Methodist Church mission to Bolivia in 1968. He was a life member of the PA Colony of the General Society of Mayflower Descendents.
Rick is survived by his three children, Heather McGee and husband William of Beavercreek, OH, David Bradley Clark and wife Kira of Longmont, CO, and Gwen Pace and husband Jeff of Morrow, OH; grandchildren, Kyla McGee and husband Jack Snider and Kaitlyn McGee of Columbus, OH, Nick Pace and wife Lindsay of Maineville, OH and Greg Pace and wife Rachel of Columbus, Ohio; his sisters, Linda Lawton of Mansfield, PA, and Phyllis Mooney, Jr of Ocean City, NJ; two brothers, David Clark of Mansfield, PA and Philip Clark and wife Annie of Roseville, PA; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
The family will receive friends at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home Inc. 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Saturday, December 7th from 10 to 11 a.m. at which time a memorial service will be conducted with Father Shawn Clerkin, officiating.
Full military honors will be observed.
An open house will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. following the service at The Titusville Mill 221 S. Monroe St. Titusville, PA 16354.
