Ron Joyce Obituary

Ron Joyce, 83, of Titusville, passed away Saturday morning March 9, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family following an extended illness.

Ron was born on October 1, 1940 in Youngstown, OH to Vincent and Mary Donley Joyce. He attended catholic schools, graduating from Ursuline High School in 1958. After graduation, he served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. based at Camp Pendelton in California and also part of his enlistment in Okinawa. Following the service, he spent a year in catholic seminary in Missouri. In April 1966 Ron married Cinda Dressler of Titusville, PA.  Together they raised two sons, Bob and Alan.  Ron enjoyed being involved in his sons' activities and sports.

Ron attended college at Youngstown University in Ohio and graduated with a major in philosophy and a minor in biology. From 1966 to 1968, he worked as a counselor for the Ohio Bureau of Services for the Blind and earned his counseling degree from Kent University. He then taught biology for a year at Columbiana, OH from 1968 to 1969. In 1969 he accepted a position with Titusville High School as guidance counselor.

During the thirty-two years that Ron served as guidance counselor, he helped many students make wise career choices. He was an ambassador of good will for the school system, hosting guests and representing the school at community meetings. School organizations for which he played a leadership role were Student Council, the 5 to 1 Project, and the Rotary/Student Council Spaghetti Dinners. With his skills as a photographer and organizer, Ron initiated the Senior Slide shows. During the summers of 1973 to 1975 he directed Camp Athodanac, a girls’ camp at Canadohta Lake. Through the school year of 1975 to 1976 he moved the family to Ventura, CA where he spent time working and attending school to obtain his school administration certification.

In 1995 to 1996, Ron, along with Karl Engleka, was involved in establishing the Titusville Alumni Association, spending time and effort researching organizations established in other high schools in order to succeed in the endeavor. Nearly single-handedly he wrote the guidelines for the fledgling organization. Having helped to successfully launch the Titusville Alumni Association, he retired from the Titusville High School in 1996 leaving behind a legacy of wisdom and vision.

Ron was involved in Rotary for many years, coordinating activities between Rotary and the high school, and was in charge of Rotary Radio Days for several years. He served for ten years on the TAA Board. His interest in photography led him to establish a part time photography business in 1978 that he maintained for 30 years before retiring. He still enjoyed photography, working around the gardens of his rural home in Titusville, and communicating with his friends and family during his illness by e-mailing and texting. He enjoyed golfing and spending his winters in Florida.

Ron is survived by his wife Cinda; two sons, Bob Joyce and wife Schelly of Titusville, and Alan Joyce and wife Nataliya Maynard of Deland, FL; granddaughter, Miya Joyce; step-grandchildren, Alex, Gavin and Parker Los, Veronika and Daniel Maynard; a brother, Raymond Joyce and wife Ruth of Newbury Park, CA; a sister, Mary O’Neil of Camarillo, CA; a brother-in-law, Denis Dressler and wife Cathy of Ventura, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by a grandson, Alex Joyce; and a nephew, Ryan O’Neil.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be announced at a later date.
